Several people have asked why we supply and recommend LFP rechargeable batteries for use with the InteliEnergy lamp. Without getting too technical, LFP batteries offer a number of advantages over other battery types, including longer lifetimes, better power density (the rate that energy can be drawn from them), and LFPs are inherently safer and better for the environment than other battery chemistries.
LFP batteries are lithium iron phosphate batteries, with LFP standing for lithium ferrophosphate. The LFP chemistry offers a longer cycle life than other lithium-ion approaches, and like nickel-based rechargeable batteries (and unlike other lithium ion batteries), LFP batteries have a very constant discharge voltage. This allows the cell to deliver virtually full power until it is discharged. This makes LFP a good choice for many uses such as automotive and solar applications.
Chemically speaking, the use of phosphates in LFP batteries avoids the cost and environmental concerns of cobalt, particularly avoiding concerns about cobalt entering the environment through improper disposal.
And finally, an important advantage over other lithium-ion chemistries is the thermal and chemical stability of LFP, which improves battery safety. LFP cells are much harder to ignite in the event of mishandling, especially during charge.
In combination with InteliEnergy patent-pending technology, LFP batteries provide two outstanding advantages over less expensive NiMH batteries. First, LFP batteries charge in about half the time of NiMH in full sun-power conditions from a solar panel, and in a third of the time in low sun power conditions. Second, the lamp’s USB port is not only powered from a plugged-in solar panel or wall-plug adapter, the USB port can be powered directly from the LFP batteries.
So, LFPs offer a long life, good power density, more features, are safer and are better for the environment. The perfect InteliEnergy Lamp component!
